Folks, I have read the news report that Akufo-Addo intends to meet with the country’s former Presidents on Monday, April 17, to tap into their experiences/expertise so as to improve his governance of Ghana.
My reaction? Intense revulsion and an acrid disdain for Akufo-Addo, especially given the facts that prove to me that he is a shameless opportunist looking around for just anything at all to boost his political jingoism.
For the records, Ghana has three former Presidents (Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, and John Dramani Mahama), each of whom will be quick to thumb his chest for accomplishments that they will never allow their political opponents to undermine.
Let me brazen here to say that I expect Mahama to snub Akufo-Addo, especially at this time that the denigration and calumny of him still persists just because it was started by Akufo-Addo and is still being sustained by his kind of perverse political rhetoric to undermine everything done by Mahama.
Putting everything in perspective, let me say aboveboard that it was Akufo-Addo who led the NPP camp to characterize Mahama as incompetent and to do all in their power to portray him as a danger to Ghana’s democracy. Even as far back as the pre-Election 2012 period, Akufo-Addo had cast a huge dark cloud over Mahama (as a person and President of Ghana) to create the sordid impression that he lacked all that he (Akufo-Addo) had to take Ghana out of the woods.
The sky fell heavily on him, which sent him to the dark chambers of the Supreme Court in a vain attempt to wrest political power from Mahama through judicial crookery. The fallouts hit him hard but he never relented in his calumny against Mahama.
For election 2016, nothing could stop Akufo-Addo from undermining Mahama, even when evidence existed that he was on top of affairs. Assisted by Dr. Bawumia, the NPP armada put in action by Akufo-Addo tore Mahama into shreds as the most incompetent leader Ghana has ever had.
After creating that impression and antagonizing him by every means possible, what does Akufo-Addo think an overly “incompetent” Mahama has to offer him, the COMPETENT President that he thinks he is?
Not only that. To help Akufo-Addo in his massive campaign of calumny against Mahama, his NPP camp condemned the massive infrastructural development going on and highlighted it as the achievements of an insensitive government that couldn’t put food on the people’s tables.
Don’t even bring in the AMERI power deal and many others that were initiated to solve the perennial energy crisis. Even now in power, Akufo-Addo won’t let Mahama be. He has commissioned a 17-member committee to probe the AMERI deal, which has come out to sustain the anti-Mahama rhetoric.
More importantly, Akufo-Addo has already created the impression that he has the men/women to help him do what his predecessors couldn’t do. That explains why he bulldozed his way through to abolish Ministries, to re-align some, and to create totally new ones with weird names and parallel functions all over the place for which he appointed 110 Ministers/Deputy Ministers to head.
Not to talk about the band of empty braggarts that he has surrounded himself with at the seat of government on whom to spend hundreds of millions of the tax payers’ money.
Public criticism won’t make him recant because to him, there is no need for any talk of a “bloated” government, the very accusation that he had levelled against Mahama.
On the basis of these facts and many others that support my stance that Akufo-Addo is only seeking the means to play some out-of-place political game and create the impression that he cherishes the experiences/expertise of his predecessors, I urge Mahama to distance himself from him on Monday.
One can tell that Mahama operates on matters of principle, which Akufo-Addo does not. If Akufo-Addo were to do so, he would be the last person to snuggle to Jerry Rawlings to seek his blessing at the polls. Having led the Kufuor administration to strip Rawlings of all protocol support and to humiliate him—and having not openly apologized for that mischief—Akufo-Addo still stands tall as an unprincipled political opportunist.
He thrives on political violence, as we can see from the misbehaviour of the hoodlums that he has mobilized under different guises to fight his cause.
Perhaps, on that score, there is a common thread binding him and Rawlings together, which will explain why they will be arm-in-arm against the very political camp that Rawlings himself vehemently worked to establish and nurture. Rope in Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings and your circle is complete.
Ex-President Kufuor may choose to be with Akufo-Addo despite all the bad-blood relationship that has been reported between them over the years. After all, their common objective is to have the NPP back in power.
Putting everything together, I can say with much conviction that Akufo-Addo has already seen the danger in front of him, which explains his spur-of-the-moment move to seek guidance from the 3 former Presidents. Had he known the truth earlier, he might not have overstretched himself to make all the bombastic noise that put him in power. Ghanaians are difficult people, Akufo-Addo!!
Anyone disagreeing with me that Mahama should snub Akufo-Addo needs a lot of introspection and a thorough analysis of the Ghanaian condition. It is not as if I don’t want Ghana’s problems to be solved. It is simply that I hate to see the manouevres being made by Akufo-Addo as if he wants to approach governance in a manner that we haven’t seen before. He has already failed to impress us. Mischief is in his character.
Again, let it be said loudly and clearly that I don’t see anything genuine about Akufo-Addo’s invitation to the 3 former Presidents to sit down with him. How will they do so? As a group or individually (when everything points to the fact that they will never ever agree to concede failure as leaders at one time or the other)?
Will Rawlings sink his bitter differences with Kufuor and walk arm-in-arm with him to sit down before Akufo-Addo and pretend that whatever has torn them apart all these years has evaporated overnight just because Akufo-Addo wants to hob-nob with them? My heart aches here!!
Again, what is it about the governance style, experiences, or expertise of these ex-Presidents that is a mystery to Akufo-Addo which he wants to use Monday’s interactions to unearth for his own good? Too many nagging questions!!
I insist that Mahama should not attend that meeting. If Akufo-Addo is looking for the missing link, he should just lay hands on the NDC’s manifesto and _Green Book_ to learn all that he intends to grab from Mahama.
How can an incompetent Mahama now serve as a source of inspiration to the COMPETENT Akufo-Addo, just 100 days in office?
Folks, I will be extremely embittered if the Lion of Gonja heeds the invitation to appear before the Akim Dwarf on Monday. Then, I will bounce back with what I have on my mind.
