President Akufo-Addo Gives Nepotism a New Meaning as He Appoints His Cousin as Chief Justice – Young Cadres
President Akufo-Addo’s government will go down in history as the most cronyistic, nepotistic government ever formed in the history of this nation. To the tall list of family and friends making up over 80 percent of his appointments, the President has added yet again another family member – Justice Sophia Akuffo.
Lest we forget, the following personalities who are currently members of the government are direct cousins and family members of the President : Honourable Atta Akyea (Minister of Water Works and Housing), Madam Gloria Akuffo (Attorney-General and Minster of Justice), Nana Asante Bediatuo (Secretary to the President), Honourable Kwesi Amoako Atta (Minister of Roads and Highways), Ken Ofori-Atta (Minister of Finance and Economic Planning), Nana Adjoa Hackman, wife of Gabby Asare Okyere-Darko, and the list goes on and on.
In fairness to the President, all his cousins are fully qualified to occupy the positions they have been assigned. However, the linkage between nepotism and corruption makes the two unwanted bedfellows. Take the recent $ 2 billion bond issue and the accusations flying around that the Minister of Finance kept the issuance of the bond under a shroud of secrecy, only to sell over 90 percent of the bond to his friend. Or can we imagine a scenario where Sophia Akuffo has to rule over a case involving her cousin the President? We could all guess where that will end. And of course, with this new phenomenon, we are going to see a high number of government contracts and opportunities going to one family.
The irony of this whole situation is that, President Akufo-Addo and his Vice Mahamudu Bawumia continually accused ex-President Mahama of this same crime, even though there was no known direct cousins of Mahama holding high offices as we have now. Famous among the then candidate Akufo Addo’s diatribes and one of his key promises during the campaign season was “I won’t form a family and friends government.” As to what happened to this, no one knows. And Dr Bawumia, who sang to the high heavens issues of cronyism and nepotism in the Mahama government, has suddenly turned a blind eye to it.
As a youth activist group committed to fighting for justice and equality, we the members of Young Cadres Association (YCA) cannot sit by for our country to be mortgaged to one family. We are thus calling on the President to halt these biased appointments and open the field for everyone to play. There are talents everywhere in this country and it is unacceptable for the country to be turned into a nepotocracy.
And to the civil society groups and the clergy who find such developments amusing, we are reminding them that they are the conscience of the nation and must speak up. They are by their loud silence on such key issues betraying their true selves and political colourations.
Let us all well-meaning Ghanaians rise up and condemn the President’s actions and ensure equality and fairness for all in this nation.
